Erdogan Addresses Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

(MENAFN) Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Tuesday that Israel's acknowledgment of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign nation, making it the sole country to do so, does not provide advantages for Somalia or the surrounding region.

"I would like to reiterate that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland would benefit neither Somaliland nor the Horn of Africa," Erdogan emphasized during a joint press conference with Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa.

Erdogan highlighted that nations within the region should seek homegrown solutions to local challenges, stressing that the Horn of Africa should not become "an arena of struggle for foreign powers.”

He further noted that Türkiye values the sovereignty and territorial unity of the region's countries and aims to prevent additional conflicts and hardships from arising in an area already affected by significant instability.

Acknowledging Türkiye’s role in mediating between Ethiopia and Somalia through the Ankara Process, Erdogan expressed gratitude toward both nations for their cooperative approach.

“Once stability is achieved, we see no obstacle to the Horn of Africa attaining a position that attracts attention with its economic opportunities,” he concluded, pointing to the region's potential once peace is established.
