Somalia Praises Turkey’s Offshore Drilling Mission as “Historic”

(MENAFN) Hamza Abdi Barre on Monday praised the launch of Türkiye’s deep-sea drilling operation off Somalia’s coast as a “historic” milestone, as the Turkish drillship Cagri Bey sets out on its first overseas mission.

“Today, with Cagri Bey, we may be witnessing the beginning of something greater — the opening chapter of real economic transformation,” Barre wrote on the social media platform X.

He described the project as a turning point where Somalia’s natural resources begin to strengthen the nation and deliver tangible benefits to its people.

“Generations of our people have grown up hearing that Somalia is rich in resources; yet for decades they have waited to see that promise fulfilled. That wait is ending. Better days are on the horizon,” he added, highlighting the anticipated impact of the mission.

Barre also expressed gratitude toward Somalia’s “Turkish brothers,” led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for selecting Somalia as the inaugural destination. “This decision is more than strategic — it is a symbol of trust crossing distances and a testament to the evolving partnership between Türkiye and Somalia, rooted in brotherhood and a shared belief in a better tomorrow,” he said.

Cagri Bey departed from the southern port of Tasucu on Sunday and is expected to reach Mogadishu in approximately 45 days. Drilling at the Curad-1 well is scheduled to begin in April.

Türkiye and Somalia signed agreements in 2024 covering both onshore and offshore oil and gas exploration. Previously, the seismic vessel Oruc Reis completed surveys in three offshore blocks as part of the collaborative energy initiatives.
