Somalia Airstrikes Target al-Shabaab in Ongoing Military Operations
In a statement, officials said the strikes were carried out in multiple regions, including Hiran, Lower Shabelle, Bay, and Lower Jubba, and led to the destruction of key positions described as belonging to the group.
Authorities noted that these locations had been under close government surveillance after recent signs of militant activity in those areas.
The ministry added that the airstrikes also hit supply depots and weapons stockpiles, “significantly weakening the group’s logistical capacity, mobility and ability to organise attacks against Somali civilians.”
The announcement comes a day after Somali forces, supported by regional security units, carried out a “large-scale operation” in southern parts of the country, killing 27 al-Shabaab members, including senior figures.
Al-Shabaab has been fighting the Somali government for more than 16 years, frequently carrying out attacks against security forces, officials, and civilians.
Since July, Somali forces—backed by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia and other partners—have stepped up operations against the group in support of the federal government.
The mission’s mandate was extended for another year by the UN Security Council in December under a resolution supported by the United Kingdom, allowing it to continue through Dec. 31.
