Somalia Warns Israeli Move in Somaliland Could Threaten Regional Stability
In an interview, Ali Mohammad Omar stated that the decision, which he said was taken in late December, has pushed Mogadishu to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at building international support for Somalia’s position.
“Since then, we have taken a lot of steps diplomatically to garner the support of the international community,” he said, adding that several countries and international organizations, including Türkiye, have backed Somalia’s stance.
He reiterated that Somalia views Somaliland as part of its national territory and argued that the region is not fully unified internally, saying only a limited faction is pushing for separation.
He also warned that external political actions could deepen divisions in the region. “The actions of Israelis are trying to create more difficulty in a region that is already fragmented,” he said, cautioning that further instability could create space for extremist groups such as al-Shabaab and ISIS (Daesh) to expand their influence.
Omar stressed that maintaining a unified and stable Somalia is important for wider regional and global security, particularly given the Horn of Africa’s strategic location near key maritime routes.
He highlighted the importance of the corridor connecting the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, noting that a significant portion of global trade passes through the area. “The world cannot afford another choke point similar to Hormuz,” he said, warning that unrest could disrupt international shipping and commercial flows.
He called for greater cooperation among regional states bordering the corridor to ensure the security of maritime trade and freedom of navigation.
