Somali President Criticizes Israel Over Recognition of Somaliland
Speaking in an interview with a local television station, Mohamud described the move as one of the most difficult moments in Somalia’s recent history and argued that Israel was capitalizing on divisions between the federal government and authorities in Hargeisa.
“Tel Aviv is taking advantage of the long-standing dispute between Mogadishu and Hargeisa,” Mohamud said.
The president explained that Somalia had considered different options for dealing with the issue of Somaliland but ultimately chose dialogue and peaceful engagement rather than military action.
“Though it took over 30 years, it was the most suitable approach under the circumstances,” he said.
Mohamud reiterated that Somalia has never maintained diplomatic relations with Israel and stated that he regards Israel as an aggressor against the Palestinian people.
His remarks come amid renewed debate over Somaliland’s international status and the broader implications of recognition by foreign governments.
